The integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in language education and assessment has paved the way for timely, dynamic, and multi-agent delivery of assessment results and feedback for learners. However, this advancement has also raised theoretical and empirical challenges in terms of operationalizing the target construct and ensuring equitable and fair assessment practices for all.

In this talk, Eunice Eunhee Jang, PhD, from the Department of Applied Psychology and Human Development at the University of Toronto, will explore the promises and pitfalls of AI-infused language education and assessment. She will examine the challenges of integrating complex machine-learning techniques into diagnostic and formative assessment practices, where pedagogical values are typically pre-specified. Additionally, she will discuss the authenticity of technology-mediated assessment, the content and mode of actionable feedback for students’ reading, writing, and oral language development, and the potential for AI to replicate covert and overt human biases in processing natural languages. By addressing these critical implications for pedagogical values, diagnostic and formative assessment, and equitable and fair assessment practices, this talk will provide valuable insights for educators, practitioners, and policymakers to enhance teaching and learning in the classroom through AI-infused language education and assessment.
